Collaborative Community and Student Events
The Erma Byrd Higher Education Center Complex is home to four institutions (Bluefield State College, Concord University, Marshall University, and New River Community and Technical College) that work collaboratively to provide the best student experience possible for all students! The following are collaborative student events held at the Complex:
The 2018 US Senator Joe Manchin and WV Higher Education Policy Commission Erma Byrd Higher Education Center Regional Job & Resource Fair held on March 23, 2018, from 11-2pm. You can download the event publication by clicking here.
The Erma Byrd Center and Allied Health Wing collaborated with Bluefield State College, Concord University, Marshall University and New River Community and Technical College to bring public awareness to maintaining a healthy lifestyle on Friday, October 20, 2017. This trick-or-treat themed event drew in students and the general public to receive blood pressure and glucose checks, flu shots, hearing tests, the American Red Cross blood drive. Vendors included (but are not limited to) the following: Bluefield State College; College Suicide Awareness; the Red Cross Blood Mobile; the Women's Resource Center (Beckley, WV); Women's, Infants and Children (WIC); Raleigh County Health Department - Flu Shots; Against Tobacco Coalition; Erma Byrd Center Impairment Goggles Activity; Sam's Vision; Visiting Angels of Southern WV; Raleigh County Commission on Aging; Raleigh Hearing Center; Beckley Fire Department; Panhandle In-home Support Services; Unicare Health Plan of West Virginia, Inc.; Balanced Life Studio – Yoga; Beckley Kiwanas; Mountain State Healing Spring Medspa and Mountain State Ear Nose & Throat (ENT).
This Tricks and Treats for a Healthier You event brought free wellness check-ups and information about local health resources to southern West Virginians and included thirty vendors from the health and wellness fields. Students from Allied Health programs showed their skills by assisting medical professionals in the provision of finger sticks for blood glucose checks, blood pressure checks and a variety of physical therapy activities, etc.

The Erma Byrd Higher Education Center and it's partners, to include Bluefield State College, Concord University and Marshall University, celebrated its' 10-Year Anniversary on Friday, August 4, 2017, from 11 - 2:00 p.m. Thirty (30) $1,000.00 scholarship opportunities were available to students whom attended the event and are enrolled in classes at The Erma Byrd Higher Education Center.
Bluefield State College awarded $10,000.00 in scholarships, Concord University awarded $10,000.00 in scholarships and The Higher Education Foundation awarded $10,000.00 in scholarships to students taking classes at the Erma Byrd Higher Education Center for the 2017/2018 Academic Year on Friday, August 11, 2017. The Erma Byrd Higher Education Center Time Capsule was also buried filled with advice and words of wisdom for future students, staff, faculty, administrators and visitors to be opened in the Year 2027!
Two “Centers” with ties to the Late US Senator Robert C. Byrd collaborate on the revival of a Summer Day Camp! The Camp was held June 19-23, 2017, from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm daily. The Camp served a total of 21 kids ages K-12! Click here to read and download publication!
The STEM Family Fun Day and RESA One 2017 Regional Science Fair took place at the Erma Byrd Higher Education Center Complex on Saturday, April 29, 2017, from 8:30 AM to 1:00 PM. This event was a collaboration between Concord University, Bluefield State College, New River Community and Technical College, RESA 1, West Virginia State University's Center for the Advancement of Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics and the Erma Byrd Higher Education Center.
