Concord Student Receives Scholarship

Athens, W.Va. - Concord College senior Stephanie Cochran, a 1997 graduate of Man High School has received the first annual Hawey A. Wells, Sr. Biology Scholarship. The award is made for excellence in academics, student research, participation in biology electives and a commitment to learning.

Cochran will graduate in May 2001 with a Bachelor of Science degree in biology.

“I am very honored and excited to be the first recipient of the scholarship,” Cochran said. The award amount is $400 per year.

Dr. Roger Sheppard, chair of the department of biology described Cochran as “the kind of student I like to have in class. A good student!” Sheppard also cites Cochran’s academic record and “the amount of work she does tutoring” as reasons for her accomplishment.

Named for Concord professor Hawey A. Wells, Sr., the award is presented to seniors majoring in biology or in biology education.

Wells, a professor at Concord for over 30 years, retired in 1965 after teaching music, general biology, genetics, eugenics and conservation.
