Who Ordered Rain?

Athens, W.Va. - Eighty-four golfers participated in the 13th annual Concord College Foundation / Homer K. Ball Scholarship Golf Tournament at Pipestem Resort State Park, Friday, June 1, 2001. The benefit tourney raised $10,000 for advanced placement student-scholarships at Concord College.

This unique scholarship rewards outstanding performance in the enriched high school classes taught as part of the nationwide Advanced Placement Program of The College Board. Students study college-level material in these classes, gaining an appetite for success in higher education. The Golf Tournament is sponsored by the Concord College Foundation, which has provided scholarship support for Concord since 1966. Concord’s scholarship program ranks among the best in West Virginia public colleges.

Although rain pelted the golfers as they made their rounds on the lush greens, it didn’t dampen their spirits or commitment to the College’s scholarship program. Jim Brown, president of the College’s Board of Advisors and participant in this year’s event noted that, “this event provides much-needed scholarships in southern West Virginia. But, we want to make Doug (Machesney, organizer of the event) pick a sunny day next year!”

Door prizes were given away at a picnic held after the tournament. The Greenbrier donated a 3-day, 2-night stay as 1st prize and Fast Eddie Lilly’s Rivers, Inc., donated a whitewater rafting trip and dinner for 4 as 2nd prize. Other regional supporters for the event included: The Greenbrier, Ramey Motors, Fountain Springs, Lowe’s, Norfolk Southern, Acordia of West Virginia, BB&T, First Community Bank, Twin Falls State Park, Pipestem State Park, Hawk’s Nest State Park, Bluefield Regional Medical Center, Norfolk Southern, Anker Energy, Central Printing, ARAMARK and the Concord College Bookstore.

“Many of you have played in every event we have held,” noted Homer Ball, chair of the golf planning committee and emcee for picnic lunch. “We have wonderful sponsors who support higher education. We are grateful to our participants, our sponsors and the members of the planning committee who make this all possible!”

President Jerry Beasley extended a heartfelt thanks to all who supported the College’s efforts of funding higher education in southern West Virginia. “Thanks to Homer for all he has done. This event gives the College and students a great boost.”
