16th Annual Concord Phonathon Concludes With $75,206 in Pledges

Athens, W. Va. – “The Concord College 2004 Phonathon finished March 4 with $75,206 in pledges,” announced Associate Vice President for Development, Loretta A. Young. “Mary Frances Williams was organizer this year, and did a swell job as she served as cheerleader for many campus organizations who dialed for dollars.”

The Concord College Foundation conducts an annual phonathon, where students and volunteers called alumni and friends of the College, asking for contributions to support the College’s scholarship program. Callers began dialing February 15, ending on March 4.

“Now, we need to encourage all who pledged to mail their contributions,” stated Ms. Williams. “We had more than 60 volunteers who helped, representing 11 groups. Concord’s football team volunteered several nights, and if their enthusiasm is any indication, then next year’s football season should prove successful!

Student organizations that participated included: Alpha Sigma Alpha, Alpha Sigma Tau, Campus Crusade for Christ, Concord Ambassadors, Concord Football Team, Concord Housing (North Towers), International Students, Nubian Pride, Phi Sigma Phi, Student Support Services, Wilson Hall, and Sarvey Hall.

Roman Stauffer, from Princeton, received the individual achievement award of a large stuffed bear, which he will donate to the College’s day care center.

Area businesses were very supportive by donating prizes for the student organizations. Businesses included:

BB&T-Athens, Cici’s Pizza, Cheap Thrills, Chick-Fil-A at Mercer Mall, Cole Chevrolet, Cracker Barrel, Dairy Queen, First Community Bank, El Mariachi Mexican Restaurant, JC Penney Styling Salon, New Horizon Day Spa, New People’s Bank, Patty’s Tanning, Subway, Tolley’s Bible Bookstore, Tropical Sun & Tattoo, Vincenza's Steak, Seafood and Italian Restaurant, Wal-mart Hair Salon, and Walden Books.
