Acts Committee Asks for Past Volunteers and Recipients of Awards to Attend

Athens, W.Va. – The Athens-Concord Town Social Committee invites volunteers who helped plan previous Town Social events and recipients of awards given at the Town Social to attend this year’s event, to be held Sunday, August 13 from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Past volunteers and recipients of awards will be recognized between 2:35 p.m. and 3:30 p.m., and the Committee will have special ribbons at the registration desk for the honorees to wear.

Town Social Chair Tom Bone said, “The 20th anniversary of the Town Social is a special time to look back and honor people who have helped Athens and Concord move forward, and helped make the annual picnic the immense success it has become. We’ve honored the wisdom of ‘elder citizens,’ the commitment of longtime business owners and the tireless efforts of those involved in the total community. We look forward to having them and their families back.”

T-shirts featuring art by Concord University student and intern in the public relations office, Kylene Babsky, will be on sale. Babsky is from Princeton. The art was inspired by sculptures of mountain lions by local artist Michael Sizemore that will be unveiled this fall. Two bronze sculptures, one of a mature mountain lion representing experience and a young mountain lion representing youth will be installed in front of the Marsh Library this fall.

The Town Social will be Sunday, August 13, from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. on the front lawn of the Concord University campus.

The Town of Athens and Concord University jointly plan the social, which is traditionally held on the second Sunday of each August. The goal of the Town Social is to provide an opportunity for residents of the Town of Athens and surrounding areas, the Concord community and visitors to socialize in a small-town setting -- 600-800 guests typically attend.

Vendors are invited to set up a booth, free-of-charge, to display and sell their handicrafts, and local musicians provide toe-tappin’ entertainment for the guests. ARAMARK provides the fixin’s for a picnic, also free-of-charge.
