EXPERIENCES OF WAR VETERANS FOCUS OF
SPECIAL TOPICS COURSES AT CONCORD UNIVERSITY
Athens, W.Va. – Concord University is offering three special topics courses for the Fall 2009 semester aimed at preserving the legacy of American war veterans.
Veterans Oral History courses are being presented by Veterans Services and the baccalaureate and masters programs at Concord University. The collection of veterans oral histories is part of a national project being conducted by the Library of Congress.
Students will be trained in interviewing techniques and will then collect first-hand accounts of veterans of World War I, World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, the Persian Gulf War, and the Afghanistan and Iraq conflicts.
The courses will be held on Tuesdays from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in the Rahall Technology Center, Room 103. Each five-week course will offer one hour of credit. The courses are open to juniors, seniors and graduate students. Registration will be conducted on the first night of class.
“Veterans Oral History I” will be held Aug. 25 – Sept. 22 and involves the procedures of collecting oral histories and the interviewing process. “Veterans Oral History II” will be held Sept. 29 – Oct. 27 and involves the actual collection of oral histories. “Veterans Oral History III” will be held Nov. 3 – Dec. 8 and also involves the actual collection of oral histories.
“Veterans Oral History I” is a pre-requisite to “Veterans Oral History II” and “Veterans Oral History III” or the student may obtain consent of the instructor if he/she has a background of oral history collection procedures and the interviewing process.
