Concord University Bonner Scholars To Host 9th Annual Box City

Athens, W.Va. - The Concord University Bonner Scholars will host their 9th Annual Box City April 16 through 17. The event aims to raise awareness about homelessness and to raise funds for Scottie’s Place, a wilderness camp for homeless children located in Peterstown.

Students will spend 24 hours living in a box on the front lawn of the Bonner House. Samantha Smith, Box City supervisor says students will gain perspective by participating.

“There are around 3.5 million people who are homeless and a lot of people don’t understand what it’s like,” Smith said. “It’s a good way to raise money for Scottie’s Place and gain awareness on homelessness.”

Students are asked to donate a minimum of $20 to Scottie’s Place as a registration fee for each box. The deadline to register for a box is 4 p.m. Tuesday, April 13.

“We raised a few hundred dollars last year and we are hoping to do just as well this year,” Smith said. “Every little bit helps though. Even a little bit of money can bring the kids more activities and food.”

To register, stop by the Bonner House or mail registration forms and donations to Bonner House, D-131 Concord University, PO Box 1000, Athens, WV 24712.
