Earth Day 2010 Celebration Planned at Concord University

Athens, W.Va. - Concord University will celebrate the 40th anniversary of Earth Day on April 22, 2010 with grounds clean-up and beautification projects campus-wide. Students, staff and faculty will be involved in the day-long event which includes litter pick-up, flower bed weeding, flower and tree planting and other activities to benefit the campus environment.

“The Earth Day Committee hopes that students, faculty, and staff will embrace this opportunity to work closely together in honor of the Earth and our Concord community,” Earth Day Committee member Anna Mills-Hardy said.

“Our goal is for everyone to have a day of fun, a deeper appreciation for the Earth, and a stronger connection with each other,” she said. “We also hope that participants will use this opportunity to reflect upon how our daily actions impact the environment.”

As part of the celebration, Concord University Athletics is launching its “Planting the Seed” Going Green Campaign. The campaign hopes to plant the seed of environmental awareness with promotions like “Walk to Work Wednesdays.” Representatives from CU Athletics will plant flowers at the front entrance of campus on Earth Day.

Members of Concord’s Bonner Scholars Program are building bird houses at the campus gazebo as their contribution to Earth Day 2010.

Additionally, the Concord cafeteria is “trayless” this week in an effort to reduce energy consumption and food waste associated with using trays. The campus community is also being asked to dim lights in classrooms and offices for Earth Day when possible.
