ATHENS, W.Va. - Volunteers from Concord University are helping make the area a better place on Make A Difference Day. The national day set aside each year to help others is being held Saturday, Oct. 22.

Concord’s volunteer efforts are organized by the University’s Bonner Scholars Program. Bonner Coordinator Sharde Hardy said Concord representatives are helping with projects at four sites in southern, West Virginia: Pam’s Place and Tender Mercies Ministries, both in Princeton; Pipestem State Park in Summers County; and Scottie’s Place in Peterstown.

Pam’s Place is a safe haven for area women and children who are victims of domestic violence. Volunteers will help prepare the facility’s retail store for the holiday season by decorating and changing merchandise. Park and trail clean-up is on the agenda at Pipestem.

Tender Mercies Ministries provides food and guidance, at no cost, to those in need in the Princeton area. Volunteers will work in the food pantry, prepare food boxes and bag pinto beans. Scottie’s Place works with impoverished, homeless and at-risk children. Individuals assisting there will participate in planned recreational activities and a river clean-up with the youth of Scottie’s Place.
