GAY-STRAIGHT ALLIANCE HOLDING PRIDE WEEK AT CONCORD UNIVERSITY
ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University Gay-Straight Alliance will be holding its annual “Pride Week” celebration the week of April 29 through May 3, 2013 around campus. The week is meant to shine light on and give a voice to the LGBTQ community of Concord and southern West Virginia.
On Monday, April 29, the GSA will have a petition to end workplace discrimination in West Virginia set up downstairs in the Jerry and Jean Beasley Student Center from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Fairness West Virginia, who is sponsoring the petition, is one of the leading advocates for LGBTQ rights in West Virginia. The petition by the organization will promote the passage of the Employment and Housing Non-Discrimination Act (EHNDA), also known as HB 2856, which will add sexual orientation and gender identity to the Human Rights Act.
On Tuesday, April 30, transgender comedian Allison Grillo will perform at Subway Sides at 8 p.m. She is a member of the Broadway Comedy Club and is also the producer and host of “Up on the Roof.” Grillo has a Ph.D. in English and has performed at major universities such as the University of Pennsylvania, St. Johns University and Emerson College.
On Wednesday, May 1, the GSA will hold an “Anti-Smoking Movie Night” with the showing of a film by David Smith. “Ladybeard” follows the life of Andy who helps his lesbian friend by pretending to be her boyfriend in front of her parents. When her girlfriend proposes to her, she decides to come out to her parents. Fearing this means the end of their friendship, Andy sets out to stop her from coming out of the closet. The film is brought to Concord by Apartment 2B Productions.
On Thursday, May 2, at 6:30 p.m., the GSA will host a pride march around the Concord campus. All are welcome to attend this march to spread awareness of the LGBTQ community and its allies at the university.
Events conclude on Friday, May 3 with mock weddings. Anyone can come and marry their friends and sweethearts with an “official” GSA marriage license. The event will be held during the day in the gazebo in the Valley, weather-permitting.
Anyone who has any questions regarding the event can contact the Gay-Straight Alliance Organization Adviser Joan Pendergast at 304-384-5289 or by e-mail at email@example.com. For updates throughout the week, the GSA can be found on Facebook (facebook.com/cugsa) and Twitter (twitter.com/concordgsa).
