ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University Choir will hold its annual spring concert on Tuesday, April 21 at 7 p.m. in the Alexander Fine Arts Center Main Auditorium. The Alexander Fine Arts Center is located on Concord’s Athens, W.Va. campus at 1000 Vermillion Street.

The concert will be performed by the two Concord University choirs: the Collegiate Singers and the ConChords.  The choirs are conducted by Dr. Kelly Hudson, Professor of Music and accompanied by Ms. Laurel Black.  The concert is titled “Words & Music” and features musical settings of poems by well-known poets, including Robert Frost, Emily Dickinson, and Walt Whitman.  Additionally, the ConChords will be presenting some jazz/pop arrangements, including pieces by Rogers & Hart, Cole Porter, and Freddie Mercury.

According to Dr. Hudson, all the pieces were composed in the 20th century or 21st century and each one has either an American poet or composer. With themes ranging from a conversation between young suitors to a statement about the tragedies of war, everyone will find something of themselves in the pieces performed.

Ms. Black added, “Audience members will hear a variety of styles and instrumentations at the concert, as some pieces are for only men or only women; some include accompaniment while others do not, and student Jeff Brannon will accompany the women’s chorus on horn.”

This concert is free and open to public. For more information, contact Dr. Kelly Hudson at (304) 384-5301 or email at
