Concord University SGA President Wins Graduate Fellowship Award

ATHENS, W.Va. - Concord University Student Government Association President Jeff Yeager received the Region V graduate fellowship award during the Alpha Chi Honor Society Super-Regional Convention held at the Peabody Hotel Conference Center in Little Rock, Ark. March 25-27, 2010. Yeager, of Oceana, received $1000 in scholarship money for his winning competition entry, a paper dealing with William Shakespeare.

Concord Alpha Chi members Erin Gedicke and Donna Franks also represented Concord’s West Virginia Beta Chapter at the conference. Both Yeager and Franks are still in the running for national fellowship awards with the announcement of the winners to be made public after April 12. Franks, a Concord education major and Princeton resident, entered the graduate fellowship competition with a paper on Sarah Orne Jewett.

Dr. Stephen Rowe, Concord’s Alpha Chi sponsor, accompanied the delegation to Little Rock and was elected President of Alpha Chi Region V for the 2010-2011 year.

The Alpha Chi National Council annually sponsors student scholarship competitions for both undergraduate and graduate students. More than 20 cash awards of up to $3500 are provided by the Society each year, and Concord Alpha Chi members have won over $18,000 in Alpha Chi awards in the past 10 years.

The Society has seven regional organizations with Region V including 46 chapters in the states of Michigan, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Kentucky and West Virginia. There are currently over 350 Alpha Chi chapters around the nation.
