Athens-Concord Town Social Announces Entertainment Lineup

ATHENS - Bluegrass, old-time and the melodic sounds of a carillon will entertain guests during the 24th Annual Athens-Concord Town Social. The gathering is set for Sunday, Aug. 8, 2010 from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. on the front lawn of Concord University.

As a special prelude to the festivities, Concord carilloneaur Jesse Ratcliffe will perform a live concert on the Marsh Memorial Carillon from 1:40 p.m. to 2 p.m. Ratcliffe is arranging a medley of Concord songs and will premiere the piece as part of his program. The distinctive sounds of the bells will be audible across campus and into parts of town.

The Marsh Memorial Carillon is West Virginia’s only true carillon with 48 bells and a four-octave musical range. The largest bell, called the bourdon, weighs 4,310 pounds. A true carillon has no electrical amplification and consists of at least 23 tuned, cast bronze bells. The late Joseph F. Marsh, Jr., president emeritus of Concord, donated the world-class instrument to the university.

Two popular area bands who are both members of the Appalachian Highlands Music Association will take the stage during the afternoon.

The Midnight Ramblers String Band, an old-time group, will perform from 2:10 p.m. until 3:30 p.m. Bluegrass band Ridgeline is set to entertain from 4 p.m. until 5 p.m.

Along with live musical entertainment, the Athens-Concord Town Social features craft vendors and informational displays, children’s games, a complimentary picnic lunch, free admission and lots more family fun. Individuals, along with a local business, who have enhanced community and campus life, will be honored. Theme for this year is “Athens-Concord: Cleaner and Greener.”

Vendors are invited to set up a booth, free-of charge, to display and sell their handicrafts. For information and to reserve a vendor space contact Anne O’Sullivan at 304-384-7353 or Sharon Griffee at 304-384-3243. Vendors are encouraged to make reservations with O’Sullivan or Griffee by Tuesday, Aug. 3, 2010. Inquiries about vendor space after this date should be made by contacting Lynne White, Athens-Concord Town Social Committee chairperson, at 304-384-4117 or White is also available for general information about the event.
