MOUNTAIN LIONS’ MATCHUP AGAINST URBANA CANCELLED
ATHENS, W.Va. - Concord University’s football game against Urbana University (Ohio), scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 22, 2011, is cancelled.
The cancellation is the result of the Blue Knights scheduling two teams on Oct. 22 and then deciding to cancel the contract with Concord University, CU Director of Athletics Kevin Garrett said.
Urbana’s official athletics website shows the Blue Knights are playing Notre Dame College (Ohio) that day in a non-conference game in Urbana, Ohio.
Concord will not fill the unexpected open date and will use it as a bye week before closing the 2011 regular season with West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference matchups at Fairmont State (Oct. 29), at West Liberty (Nov. 5) and at home against West Virginia Wesleyan (Nov. 12).
“With the cancellation coming when it did, it is next to impossible to find a replacement for Urbana on the schedule,” Garrett said. “We contacted the NCAA and several schools to find a replacement, but were unsuccessful.”
The game was to have been Concord’s third and final non-conference game of the 2011 season. The Mountain Lions open the 2011 season at home against Lenoir-Rhyne (N.C.) on Saturday, Sept. 3. Kickoff is at 7 p.m. Concord visits NCAA FCS Division program Elon University (N.C.) the following week.
Concord’s season is trimmed from 11 games to 10. The Mountain Lions will have five home games at Callaghan Stadium instead of the originally-scheduled six.
The Oct. 22 game was to have been the first of a two-game, home-and-home series that would have the Mountain Lions visiting Urbana in 2014.
