NATIONAL TRACK AND FIELD CHAMPION SHAWNEE CARNETT NAMED GRAND MARSHAL FOR CONCORD HOMECOMING PARADE
ATHENS, W.Va. – Leading Concord University’s Homecoming Parade this year is an individual accustomed to being up front. Grand Marshal for the annual event is Concord’s national track and field champion Shawnee Carnett.
A junior from Sugar Grove, Va., Carnett won the women’s 800 meter at the NCAA Division II Track & Field Outdoor National Championships in May. Her victory is Concord’s first-ever NCAA national championship, and the first in women’s track and field for the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference since the conference moved from the NAIA to the NCAA in 1994.
The parade is set for Thursday, Sept. 22 at 6 p.m. on Vermillion Street in Athens. Line-up is between 5 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. Area businesses, clubs and other organizations interested in placing entries in the parade should call 304-384-6286 or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
Carnett will also be honored during pre-game activities at the Mountain Lions’ homecoming bout with the West Virginia State University Yellow Jackets on Saturday, Sept. 24 at Callaghan Stadium. CU Athletics will present
Carnett’s championship ring to her at that time. Kickoff is at 2 p.m. A banner saluting Carnett’s victory is also being hung in the Carter Center’s main gym at Concord.
A ceremony for Carnett during Concord’s season opener on Sept. 3 was postponed.
