Concord University Mourns The Loss Of Lisa Blankenship

ATHENS, W.Va. – Concord University is mourning the loss of Lisa Ann Bergeria Blankenship, head cheerleading coach. Lisa passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, Feb. 12, 2012.

“Lisa was a very special member of our community,” Concord University President Gregory F. Aloia said. “She brought a love of Concord everyday to her work and she shared that with her students. She will be missed.”

“We are deeply saddened by Lisa’s passing. She touched the lives of countless student athletes and always had a smile and a kind word. Our thoughts and prayers go out to her family,” Concord University Athletic Director Kevin Garrett said.

Born Jan. 12, 1955 at Quantico, Va., Lisa was the daughter of Louise Rose Guerci Bergeria of Quantico and the late William Nicholas Bergeria. She was a graduate of Garfield High School in Woodbridge, Va. She received her bachelor’s degree in education from Concord and a master’s degree in library science from East Tennessee State University in Johnson City, Tenn.

Lisa started working at Concord in 1977 as an assistant cheerleading coach and later became the head coach, a position she held at the time of her death. She was also employed by Mercer County Schools as a media specialist at PikeView High School. She lived in Athens.

Lisa was devoted to her family, the many cheerleaders that she coached and the students that she shared her life with during their education. She was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Princeton and Chapter Director for Delta Zeta Sorority at Concord. She enjoyed photography, traveling, crafts, reading and doing needlepoint.

Those left to cherish her memory: Mother Louise Rose Bergeria of Quantico; her husband of 34 years, Joe Blankenship; three children, William Blankenship, of Athens, John Paul Blankenship and wife, Jennifer, of Charleston, Sara Blankenship, of Athens, and Thor Gipper family puppy; siblings, William “Woody” Bergeria and wife, Rose, of Stafford, Va., Krista Marone and husband, Frank, of Winchester, Va.; great uncle, John Tiplady of Staten Island, N.Y.; and a host of cousins, nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 16, 2012 from the Sacred Heart Catholic Church on Harrison Street in Princeton with Father Paul Wharton as the celebrant. Burial will follow in Athens Cemetery in Athens. A time of sharing and gathering will be held Wednesday, Feb. 15, 2012 from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. at the Memorial Funeral Directory on the Athens Road in Princeton with a Christian Wake service at 7:30 p.m. with Deacon Don Hammond as the speaker.
