Concord University Students and Community Coming Together
To Discuss Problem of Underage Drinking

ATHENS, W.Va. - The Mercer County Creating Opportunities for Youth (COFY) Coalition, in collaboration with students from Concord University, is hosting a Town Hall Meeting on Underage Drinking. The event is slated for Tuesday, April 24 from 4 p.m. – 6 p.m. in the ballroom of the Jerry L. Beasley Student Center at Concord University and is part of a national initiative sponsored by SAMHSA, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration.

The coalition has partnered with Concord professor Dr. Joan Pendergast and students enrolled in Concord’s social work department to host the event. Student attendees will be involved in a moderated discussion about the dangers of underage drinking and identification of solutions. Kelli Blankenship, program coordinator at Community Connections, notes, “This event is unique because it is not just another lecture. We’re seeking an open dialogue with young people to identify potential prevention strategies to alleviate underage drinking throughout the Mercer County community.”

Travis Helmondollar, West Virginia SADD’s development coordinator, said that underage drinking is a continuous concern for southern West Virginia. “It’s problematic. It’s aggressive. Yet, it’s completely preventable,” he said. “Through a collaborative, community-wide approach, COFY consistently seeks opportunities to promote a healthier, happier community.”

Members of the Mercer County community including law enforcement and prevention advocates are invited to attend. Refreshments will be served.
