ATHENS, W.Va. – Concord University Theatre will present the play “Sylvia” from Nov. 13 - 16 at 7 p.m. in the H. C. Paul Theatre of the Alexander Fine Arts Center located on the Athens campus.

According to theatre director Dr. T. Gambill, the plot of “Sylvia” is somewhat unconventional. The play introduces the audience to Greg and Kate, a run-of-the-mill couple whose marriage has become boring and conventional. Enter Sylvia, a stray dog that Greg has met in the park. With caustic humor and razor-sharp wit Sylvia not only comments on the failures of modern marriage, but offers the struggling couple a novel alternative to the daily marriage battle.

Gambill commented that he has been considering the script for several years and this year’s group of talented theatrical newcomers offered the opportunity to bring the play to life. Heading the young cast is Kayla Jordan as Sylvia. Also included in the production are Tyler Weaver and Shannon Gilpin as the frustrated married couple, Greg and Kate; Brooklyn Clemmons and Austin Fife, as visitors to the sinking marriage; and Elizabeth Stanford, as “Leslie,” the gender-bending psychiatrist confronted with trying to save a relationship that might have already gone over the brink.

Because of limited seating, reservations for “Sylvia” are strongly recommended and may be secured by contacting the Concord University box office at 304-384-5101, by visiting the box office website at cuboxoffice.com, or by coming by the box office window in the Alexander Fine Arts Center on the Athens campus. Reservations made in advance and not retrieved by 6:45 p.m. on the night of the reservation will be released to the public.

Rather than charging admission, organizers are asking the audience to provide a pet-food item for donation to the Mercer County Animal Shelter. “Sylvia” contains adult themes and language and is not recommended for children.
