ATHENS, W. Va. – Concord University’s Theatre Department presents “Oleanna” Nov. 12 -15 at 7 p.m. in the H. C.  Paul Theatre. The H.C. Paul Theatre is located in the Alexander Fine Arts Center on Concord University’s main campus at 1000 Vermillion St.,  Athens, W.Va.

“Whatever you think, you’re wrong,” is the label usually associated with American playwright David Mamet’s award winning drama “Oleanna.”  According to Concord University Theatre Director Dr. T. Gambill, the phrase pretty much sums up the play’s meaning.

“I’ve wanted to re-visit this script for a long time now. I tackled it about ten years ago and it created a ton of controversy. Believe it or not, members of the audience were screaming at each other after the show,” he said.

The play introduces us to John a young college professor who is in the process of purchasing a new home in anticipation of receiving tenure.  John finds his quiet morning disrupted by Carol, a student who is hopelessly lost in one of his large survey classes. Despite his offer to provide extra help Carol becomes increasingly confrontational until the balance of power between the student and the instructor becomes a matter of wills. By the time the play is over neither the professor or the student escapes unscathed.

Featured in the Concord cast are Tyler Weaver and Jordan Tuck as John with Kayla Jordan and Brooklyn Clemons as Carol.  The cast will alternate on successive nights.

Concord University faculty, staff and students will be admitted to the show free of charge with a validated Concord identification card. General admission will be $5 or a package of unopened pet food.   Because of special staging restrictions, audience numbers for “Oleanna” are limited and reservations are strongly recommended.

Reservations can be made online through or by calling the Concord University Box Office at 304-384-5101. Tickets can be picked up before the show at the Concord University Box Office located in the Alexander Fine Arts Center.  Reservations will be released at 6:45 p.m. each night of the show.

Please note that “Oleanna” is intended for mature audiences only and is not recommended for children.
