First Roth Scholarship Writing Competition Winner Announced

Athens, W.Va. - Concord College junior English major Debra M. Pugh of Union, W.Va., has been named the recipient of the first David S. Roth Memorial Scholarship. Pugh won the $500 award in an extemporaneous writing competition held April 7.

First Runner–up was Casie Hurt, Princeton and Second Runner-up was Kellena Baker, West Hamlin. Other finalists in the competition were Michelle Boggess, Redhouse; Colleen Coughenour, Hinton; Jessica Holly, Oak Hill; Roberta Wallace, Pickaway; Pamela Wriston, Scarbro and Felix Quachey, Ghana, West Africa. Finalists represented a wide range of majors, including business administration, English, political science, elementary education, and secondary education with concentrations ranging from biological sciences to English/language arts.

The Roth Scholarship honors the memory of Dr. David S. Roth, who taught English and journalism courses at Concord from 1969 until his untimely death from cancer in 1986. Dr. Roth was an ardent Mountain Lion athletics fan whose wide-ranging interests and zest for life inspired his family and colleagues to launch the David S. Roth Memorial Scholarship Fund.

In 1990, Concord biology Professor Roger F. Sheppard initiated a series of yearly David S. Roth Memorial 5K Walks/Runs to benefit the scholarship fund. The Concord College Student Government Association, the Concord Running Lions/Track Team, the Concord chapter of Alpha Sigma Alpha, and many volunteers have contributed to the success of the annual Walks/Runs. Thanks to campus and local area support for these events, the scholarship fund can now sustain one yearly award. Concord Track and Field Team Coach Paul T. “Tom” Davis, who recently took over Dr. Sheppard's role as Roth 5K Walk/Run coordinator, plans to schedule the next Walk/Run during the 2001-2002 school year to begin raising funds for an additional yearly scholarship award.

Application procedures for the next Roth Memorial Scholarship Writing Competition will be publicized fall 2001.
