ATHENS, W.Va. – Concord University’s Student Support Services (SSS) Program has been awarded federal funds for a new 5-year grant. The program has been refunded through August 31, 2021.

This federally-funded TRIO grant program paid through the U. S. Department of Education works to help first-generation, low socioeconomic status (SES) students and students with disabilities to successfully navigate the course of post-secondary education from entrance through graduation.

The award amount is $300,245 per year for five years for a total of $1,501,225. This amount includes $110,815 in direct grant aid to qualifying students to assist with educational expenses.

The SSS Program at Concord is funded to work with 200 students yearly.  Services available to SSS students include:  one-on-one tutoring services, eligibility to apply for grant funding through the Student Support Services Supplemental Grant Aid program (SSSG), assistance with course selection, individualized counseling services (career, academic, personal, financial aid), cultural trips, utilization of the SSS computer lab, free printing, workshops (study skills, choosing a career, test taking strategies, funding your college degree, etc.) assistance applying for graduate school, and other supportive services.

As part of the program, students of SSS submit biannual evaluations to help determine how services can be improved.  Student comments from the most recent evaluations sum up the value of SSS:  “No matter the time of day they are willing to do anything it takes in order to help the students. They have really made me feel at home at Concord and like a part of their family. I know that they are always there to help as they have done many times in the past. I owe a lot of my success at Concord to the amazing, loving, and more importantly caring staff at SSS. I couldn’t be more proud to be a part of such an amazing campus organization.”

Concord students who are interested in applying for these program-specific funds may go to and submit an electronic application. Additional information on Student Support Services is also available at this link.
