Concord College Honor Society Active This Semester

Athens, W.Va. - Students Attend Alpha Chi National Conference

Six members of the West Virginia Beta Chapter of the Alpha Chi Honor Society at Concord College attended the Alpha Chi National Conference, March 22-24, 2001 in Savannah, Ga.

Concord College was represented by Walter Sullivan, Charleston; Jatin Atre, Pune, India; Cindy Boyce, West Union; Heather Sowards, Princeton; Billie Jean Crigger, Raysal; and Judith Mwamuka, Bulawayo, Zimbabwe. Mwamuka is the West Virginia Beta Chapter official conference delegate and voted on national Alpha Chi issues. Sullivan, Atre, Boyce and Crigger presented their Concord College scholarly projects in national competition with other Alpha Chi chapters, and Sowards was a member-at-large.

The Alpha Chi Honor Society has chapters on the campuses of over 350 American colleges and universities. Each year, the Society sponsors a regional scholarly competition, and every other year the Society gathers in a national confab. Alpha Chi members from all over the United States present scholarly projects in competition for scholarships, graduate fellowships, or regional awards. The Concord Alpha Chi members competed for a $750 undergraduate scholarship or a $1,000 graduate fellowhship. Billie Jean Crigger from Raysel won the $750 scholarship.

Alpha Chi Chapter Inducts 12

The West Virginia Beta Chapter of the Alpha Chi Honor Society inducted twelve new members on Wednesday, April 11, 2001. The 12 Concord students inducted were selected by the Concord College faculty on the basis of grades, scholarly performance, and exemplary personal character.

The Spring 2001 inductees to Alpha Chi were: Katie R.Bailey, Princeton; Jason S. Ballard, Peterstown; Aaron J. Campbell, Huntington; Larry S. Deaner, Logan; Christy A. Elwell, Shady Spring; Corey A. Furches, Princeton; Varun Gupta, Mumbai, India; Jill A. Kerby, Raleigh, N.C.; Brian A. McCarthy, Dumfries, Va.; Nancy L. Meade, Princeton; Jeni M. Weatherholt, Marlinton; and Vonda L. York, Shady Spring.

Concord College was granted a chapter of the Alpha Chi Honor Society in 1969. The College may not induct more than 10% of its combined junior and senior classes to Alpha Chi, and prospective members must have earned at least a 3.50 cumulative grade point average and have received a nomination from the faculty of the College before being invited to join. This spring, Mr. Brian McCarthy became the 500th Concord College student to be inducted into Alpha Chi in its 32-year history at the College.
