CONCORD UNIVERSITY BLACK STUDENT UNION
HOSTING ANNUAL UMOJA BALL
ATHENS, W.Va. – Concord University’s Black Student Union is excited to announce that they are hosting the annual Umoja Ball again this year. The formal event will take place on Friday, Feb. 26 at 7 p.m. in the Concord University Ballroom which is located on the third floor in the Jerry and Jean Beasley Student Center.
James Riley, a member of Concord University’s Black Student Union says, “Our founders wanted to create an all-inclusive formal event for students to really enjoy. Since most of the events at the University require membership in organizations, or in the very least an invitation from a member, many students are not able to participate. Our founders could not have chosen a more fitting name for the ball since its meaning in Swahili is ‘unity.’”
Unity is Black Student Union’s mission for their celebration of Black History Month. To end this inspirational time of year, they would like to have a great turnout for the Umoja Ball. Ashley Hawkins, president of Concord’s Black Student Union says, “The Umoja Ball is a great event for everyone. It’s a time where everyone can come together and learn about Black culture and have fun! We are so excited to have everyone come out and share this experience with us!”
Tickets for the event are $7 in advance and $10 at the door. Members of all Concord University student organizations and athletic teams get in for $5 each if 10 or more tickets are ordered for their organization or team. The event is formal with a 90s theme that includes the colors silver and black.
Persons with disabilities should contact Nancy Ellison, 1-304-384-6086 or 1-800-344-6679 extension 6086
if special assistance is required for access to an event scheduled by the University on campus.
