CONCORD UNIVERSITY AWARDS SCHOLARSHIPS
DURING GEAR UP STUDENT LEADERSHIP ACADEMY
ATHENS, W.Va. – Concord University awarded $10,000 in scholarships during the GEAR UP Student Leadership Academy held Oct. 26 at the Clay Center in Charleston, W.Va. The ten $1,000 scholarships were presented to students from each of the ten counties represented at the event.
The Student Leadership Academy was coordinated by the West Virginia “Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs (GEAR UP)” initiative. West Virginia GEAR UP is a project of the West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission to help more students enroll and succeed in higher education programs. The project provides college readiness services to students in ten counties: Boone, Fayette, Mason, Mercer, Mingo, Nicholas, Summers, Webster, Wirt, and Wyoming.
“Concord University exemplifies our statewide mission to increase access to higher education,” Dr. Paul Hill, Chancellor of the West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission, said. “They have been invaluable partners in the Commission’s GEAR UP project, which works to foster a college-going culture and help more students plan, apply and pay for postsecondary programs.
Hill said the recent scholarship presentations are indicative of Concord’s support for the state’s students and their quest for a college education.
“They demonstrated to our students that they believe strongly in their futures – and the future of West Virginia. By extending scholarship opportunities to these students, who are just now in their ninth grade year, they are putting them on a path to achieve their dreams and proving that they have community support to help them along the way,” Hill said.
Greg King, Concord’s Vice President for Enrollment Management, presented the scholarships.
“We were so impressed with the West Virginia students that we met at the Leadership Academy,” King said. “The WV GEAR UP staff created an amazing, memorable experience for these students.
“We look forward to following the students as they continue their high school journey, and we will be ready to help each of them make college a reality! Concord University will host GEAR UP students on campus this summer, and we are excited to keep the conversation going,” he said.
