ATHENS, W.Va. – The ninth annual Night in the Art Gallery reception will be held on Jan. 18 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the Arthur Butcher Gallery in the Alexander Fine Arts Center on the Concord University campus in Athens, WV.    This art exhibition is a continuing partnership between Concord University’s Art Department and Mercer County Schools.

Dr. Lauri Reidmiller, the director of the event, had this to offer, “It’s important that we continue to showcase the Mercer County students and recognize their creativity and achievements in a public venue.”

Visitors will have the opportunity to view student artwork from Princeton Senior High School, Princeton Middle School, Bluefield High School, PikeView Middle School, PikeView High School, Montcalm Middle School and Montcalm High School. The exhibition will include drawings, paintings, photographs, sculptures and digital work from these young artists.

The event is free to the public and Dr. Reidmiller encourages everyone in the community to attend. “I look forward to this exhibition every year and hope that our visitors enjoy viewing the work of these young artists,” she said. “Unlike most of the curriculum being taught in the schools, in which correct answers and rules prevail, the visual arts focus on creativity and celebrate multiple perspectives.”

“Around the World” is the theme for this year’s interactive art reception. Art activities from Mexico, Australia, China, Japan and the United States will be offered.

During this interactive reception, visitors will be encouraged to create their own works of art by participating in hands-on activities and watching demonstrations conducted by Concord University Art Education and Early Education students under the direction of Dr. Reidmiller, Associate Professor of Art.  Presenters this year include Clara McIntosh, Maddie Lester, Melissa Losada,Top of Form Bottom of FormAlexi Pranckus, Brookelyn Heck, Bailey Knowles, Chloe Curry, Kelcie Lowe, Ashton Prevette and Samantha Gunnoe.

Dr. Reidmiller would like to recognize Masae Kanno, a Concord University graphic design student, for designing this year’s poster and Concord University Art Education students Jonathan Pennington, Clara McIntosh, Maria Chavez, Jessica Davidson, Melissa Losada, Hannah Smith and Maddie Lester for their help installing the artwork.

She would also like to extend a special thanks to Cynthia Tilley, Kevin Bennington, Jack Sheffler, Jamey Biggs, Marcheta Gunter and all of the young artists and their families for helping to make the ninth annual Night in the Art Gallery a success.
