CONCORD UNIVERSITY TAKES PRECAUTIONS
IN ANTICIPATION OF HURRICANE FLORENCE
ATHENS, W.Va. – Concord University officials have made the decision to close the University on Thursday, September 13th and Friday, September 14th due to Hurricane Florence, to allow students and employees time to travel safely home ahead of the impending storm.
“Most weather prediction models are calling for high winds, heavy rains prior to, during and following the storm, which may cause flooding, possible power outages, and other travel-related difficulties. The University wanted to err on the side of safety,” according to Alicia Besenyei, Vice President for Advancement.
Events scheduled on campus for either of those days will either be rescheduled or cancelled.
Concord students who would be traveling in the direction of the storm, or in areas prone to flooding have the option of leaving campus Wednesday after completing their class schedule, or remaining on campus in their residence hall for the duration of the storm. Students who choose to remain will continue to have meals served in the dining hall and generators are ready in case loss of power occurs. Concord will also have designated staff readily available to assist during any emergency situation that might occur as a result of the storm.
Always check www.concord.edu for the most up-to-date information regarding closures, delays or cancellations. Emergency information will be posted at the top of the homepage as updates are available. Students and parents are encouraged to subscribe to the Emergency Alert Text Messaging System by going to the link above, then Everyday Access, and clicking on Emergency Alert System. Doing so will insure you will receive alerts in case of any emergencies or inclement weather announcements. Concord University also sends such notices to news outlets in television and radio and posts notifications to social media as appropriate.
Persons with disabilities should contact Nancy Ellison, 1-304-384-6086 or 1-800-344-6679 extension 6086
if special assistance is required for access to an event scheduled by the University on campus.
