CONCORD UNIVERSITY HOLDING TWENTIETH FALL COMMENCEMENT
ATHENS, W.Va. – Concord University will hold its Twentieth Fall Commencement on Saturday, Dec. 8, 2018 in the Leslie R. and Ruby Webb Carter Center. The ceremony will begin at 11 a.m. in the main gym.
Twenty-eight graduate candidates and 100 undergraduate candidates meeting requirements for graduation will participate.
Along with candidates for graduation from West Virginia, candidates from out-of-state represent Virginia, North Carolina, California, Delaware, Maine, Pennsylvania, Ohio and Maryland.
International students representing Liberia, Germany, Vietnam and Nepal are also among the candidates for graduation. The Fall 2018 class includes three veterans and 35 individuals will graduate with honors.
Valedictorian for the Fall 2018 class is Suzette Yvonne Parks of Lerona, WV. Ms. Parks will receive a Regents Bachelor of Arts degree, Summa Cum Laude. She majored in Early Childhood Education.
Two alumni of Concord will receive honorary degrees during the ceremony. Evelyn Lilly Blake, a 1942 graduate, and Donald R. Holcomb, who graduated in 1979, will both be awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Humanities, honoris causa. They are being honored for their career achievements, community involvement and philanthropic spirit.
Mrs. Blake majored in biology at Concord and pursued a career in education. She has graciously given back to her alma mater by financially supporting study and research in science at the University. Her generosity has also helped the marching band purchase new uniforms and will assist in upgrading science labs and facilities.
Mr. Holcomb studied business at Concord, majoring in accounting and management. A successful businessman, he is a Certified Public Accountant and a Chartered Global Management Accountant. His generous donations to the University have included support for scholarships and athletics, along with major contributions to the President’s House restoration and track renovation projects.
Concord University’s Technology Services Department is recording and live streaming the commencement ceremony. DVDs may be ordered for $20 each or Blu-Rays for $25 the day of the event or by calling 304-384-5126, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Orders will be shipped within four to six weeks of commencement.

The Concord University Foundation will be selling an art piece featuring Marsh Hall and the Marsh Memorial Carillon. The 11” x 14” sketch and watercolor painting is by Jacks Avenue and sells for $50. Proceeds will benefit Concord’s Annual Fund.
The Concord University cheerleaders will be in the lobby of the Carter Center selling bottled water and flowers. All proceeds will benefit the CU Cheerleading Team.
A reception will be held in the Carter Center small gym following the ceremony.
