Concord Delivers “Distance Education” Courses

Athens, W.Va. - The first “distance education” courses in library science were recently offered via videoconference and over the Internet by Concord College.

“Area teachers were calling us looking for certification in the library sciences, ” Mr. Rick Druggish, professor of education and coordinator of clinical experiences said. “There was a great need there, so we stepped up to meet their need.”

Concord College is one of two colleges in West Virginia to offer degree programs in library science.

The distance education project, which took a year of planning and work, was made possible with a $5,000 grant from Verizon.

The courses are being broadcasted to Kanawha County and the Ohio Valley areas, where eight students are currently enrolled. There are also five people residing on campus and taking classes, for a total of 13 students participating in the courses. Students majoring in other subjects besides education and the library sciences will benefit from these new courses as well, since the current courses will pave the way for future classes utilizing the “distance education” approach as a regular part of the College’s curriculum.

The current courses offered are in library media, with the Internet course being taught by Mr. Roger Lester and the videoconferencing course being taught by Mr. Rick Druggish. The courses offered for spring 2002 will be library sciences 310, reference and information retrieval, taught by Mr. Lester, and library sciences 440, school library media programs and curriculum, taught by Mr. Druggish.
