Students Observe Printing Process at Beckley Firm

Athens, W.Va. - Fifteen students went to Beckley Thursday, April 13, on a graphic arts field trip with their instructor, Fernando Porras. Mr. Porras teaches Studies in Computer Graphics, an upper-level graphic design class at Concord College.

"My goal," stated Mr. Porras, "was to expose the students to techniques used in a print shop, and let them see first-hand what printers have to deal with on a daily basis. They got to see the entire printing process—from when it comes out of the computer to the final product. Vice President of Sales & Marketing, Scott Fazio, conducted the tour at Central Printing," continued Mr. Porras, "and we really appreciated the time he took to explain the printing business. Some of our students may eventually work in this area, and tours like this gives them an opportunity to not only understand the process, but meet the people in the printing business. It is easier for my students to design printed materials, if they understand the whole process."

The students that attended were: Charles Ayers, Piney View, W.Va.; Brianne Barton, Beckley, W.Va.; Crystal Crouch, Daniels, W.Va.; Michael Daniels, Bluefield, W.Va.; Audra Davis, Beaver, W.Va.; Scott McElwee, Hot Springs, Va.; Daniel McMearty, Princeton, W.Va.; Jessica Morrow, Stafford, Va.; Susannah Page, Cool Ridge, W.Va.; Gregory Roberts, Ikes Fork, W.Va.; Rachel Taylor, Bluefield, W.Va.; Sharon Trent, Crab Orchard, W.Va.; and Phillip Young, Fayetteville, W.Va.
