Concord Students to Live in “Box City” … April 30-May 1

Athens, W.Va. – Beginning this Friday, April 30, the Concord College Bonner Scholars, in conjunction with other campus organizations, are planning to host a “Box City” in an effort to raise funds for Scottie's Place.

Scottie's Place is an organization that provides homeless children with opportunities they otherwise would miss. During the summer, these children go to Scottie’s Place for a two-week camp experience. While staying there, children have a chance to do fun activities such as tree house building, mountain biking, arts and crafts, and swimming. They are given the opportunity to make friends and have fun. Located in Peterstown, West Virginia, Scottie's Place has served children from Lewisburg, Beckley, and Charleston, as well as urban areas such as Charlotte, North Carolina; Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and Washington, D.C.

To build the Box City on campus, groups are asked to form teams and construct box homes to live in for 24 hours. Each team will then secure sponsors for their boxes. The date set for Box City is Friday, April 30 through Saturday, May 1. Boxes will be set up at 8 a.m. on Friday morning and taken down at 8 a.m. Saturday morning, near the “Bonner House” at Concord College.

"I wanted to make the students at Concord know about homelessness, anyone can be homeless at any given time in their life, and we need to have our eyes open and be supportive of each other and diligent in our efforts to support places like Scottie’s Place. Scottie’s Place is located in my hometown, and I am very interested in its success,” stated Angela Miller, from Peterstown. Miller is serving as project chair for the event.
