“Conchords” to Perform, Wednesday, April 13

Athens, W.Va. – The ConChords of Concord University will present a free concert Wednesday, April 13 at 7 p.m. in the Arthur J. Butcher Gallery, located in the Alexander Fine Arts Center on the campus of Concord University. ConChords is a select vocal ensemble that includes 23 students of various majors. The ensemble is under the direction of Dr. Christopher Ryder, director of choral activities and assistant professor of music. Ms. Betty Wilson, who is also a member of the Concord music faculty, accompanies the group on piano.

The concert will include works by various composers, including Dave Brubeck, Harold Arlen, and James Taylor. The ConChords will also perform the premier of St. Thomas Motet, composed by Dr. Timothy L. Mainland, professor of music.

The Concord University Barbershop Quartet will also be performing, as will two newly formed student groups, Mish-Mash and the Chordettes.

Mish-Mash is an ensemble, which will perform works by 20th- and 21st-century choral composers. The ensemble consists of eight singers. They will be presenting two Hebrew folk songs arranged by Eric Whitacre. The group is directed by Jeremy Craft from Roanoke, Va., and accompanied by Dr. Jane Smith, professor of music.

The Chordettes is a female quartet. Their concentration is on vocal jazz and a cappella pop music. They will be performing a song by Billy Joel and a doo-wop medley. The group is under the direction of Cindy Chaffins from Bluefield, Va.

The Concord University Barbershop Quartet actually has five members – several singers alternate on parts, and several sing different parts at different times. The group will present four barbershop classics, including "Goodbye My Coney Island Baby," and other favorites. The group is under the direction of Dr. Ryder.
