SCIENCE BOWL IS BACK: CONCORD UNIVERSITY HOSTING 12-COUNTY COMPETITION NOVEMBER 4TH 2023

ATHENS, WV – Following three years of online virtual competitions, in-person Science Bowl competitions have returned to West Virginia. On Saturday, November 4th, Concord University will host a 12-county preliminary competition which will help to determine which high school teams go on to the state competition scheduled for February 3, 2024.

Concord will host high school student teams from counties located in the former West Virginia Regional Education Services Agencies (RESA) 1 and 4 areas. The RESA 1 counties include Raleigh, Summers, Monroe, Mercer, McDowell, and Wyoming. The RESA 4 counties are Braxton, Webster, Pocahontas, Greenbrier, Fayette, and Nicholas. Approximately 100 students, teachers, and family members are expected to attend, and another 30 or more Concord volunteers will help the event run smoothly.

Teams and coaches are requested to register online in advance at https://apply.concord.edu/register/sciencebowl_23, by October 27, if possible.

Onsite check-in will take place from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM on November 4th in the main lobby of the Student Center building on Concord University’s main campus in Athens, WV. The welcome ceremony and orientation will take place in the Ballroom of the same building from 1:00 to 1:15 PM. The competition begins at 1:30 PM in the nearby Science building.

Several additional activities will be available on the same day as the Science Bowl event. A Fall Open House will run from 8:30 AM until 1:00 PM with campus tours and opportunities to answer questions about financial aid, student life, academics, and more. Additional information about the open house and advance registration may be found at https://www.concord.edu/admissions/visit. Concord’s Augmented Reality Sandbox and Raspberry Shake seismograph will be open all day in the Science building.

The West Virginia Regional Science Bowl is affiliated with the National Science Bowl, which is sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy. Science Bowl is a tournament-style academic competition which tests students’ knowledge in all areas of science and mathematics. Five sites across West Virginia, including Concord, will host preliminary competitions in November and December. For the Concord competition, the top three winning teams in each RESA area competition may advance to state and potentially national competitions. The state level competition will take place on February 3rd in Morgantown.
