Business Internship Program

Putting Knowledge to Use in the Real World

Completing a business internship is a great way for students to gain real-world experience and increase their knowledge of the business world. Students who complete internships during the course of their college career have a competitive advantage in job searches, and many times an internship with a company can lead to a career upon graduation. Students who complete an internship with the proper requirements can receive three (3) credit hours as a business elective.

Why Should I Participate in an Internship Experience?

Internships are strongly recommended for all Business majors offering students a bridge between academic learning and the practical skills and knowledge needed for a successful career. These unique experiences provide excellent forums for students to apply theoretical knowledge to a business environment, work with the latest technology, improve communication skills, and build confidence in themselves and their abilities

The field internship enhances and reinforces understanding of academic theory, and this experience is more than an opportunity to just earn credit hours but also to gain career-related work experience. It is an opportunity for a student to set themselves apart from competition – other students – at graduation time. A good letter of recommendation from a cooperating supervisor will carry a great deal of weight with prospective employers and the networking opportunities of connecting with other professionals in the field increase potential job opportunities, mentorships, and valuable advice for career development.

Participation in an Internship shows initiative and motivation and to exhibit these characteristics while completing an internship, is viewed by prospective employers as very positive when making hiring decision. An internship provides students a hands-on practice to develop the skills employers are looking for in potential hires such as more involvement in teamwork, problem-solving, time management, and adaptability. The internship provides the student with increased practice in honing their communication skills, dressing appropriately for the position, and acting professionally. As an intern, students are marketing an important commodity to the cooperating firm – themselves – and many Field Internship Experiences can evolve into full time positions upon graduation.

By completing an internship, students can set themselves apart from other graduates in the job market, apply theoretical academic learning to real-world situations, practice and improve a variety of interpersonal skill, all the while building an impressive resume and networking group.
