Biography

Dr. Nola Gum, LICSW, is an Associate Professor of Social Work at Concord University, where she has taught since 2015. She earned her Bachelor of Social Work from Concord University, her Master of Social Work from West Virginia University, and her Doctorate in Social Work from Tulane University. Her research interests include evidence-based trauma treatment for adolescents in foster care, trauma-informed care, environmental social justice, and the intersection of social work policy and advocacy.

Prior to joining Concord University, Dr. Gum served in a variety of roles within child welfare and mental health services. She continues to serve the local community as a practicing therapist in Princeton, West Virginia, specializing in trauma-informed approaches across the lifespan. Dr. Gum has developed innovative therapeutic interventions for publication and has extensive experience with the West Virginia foster care system, statewide policy initiatives, grant writing, and community-based trauma training.

Dr. Gum is also deeply committed to clinical supervision and professional development within the social work profession. As a WV Board Approved Clinical Supervisor, she has provided supervision and mentorship to emerging social workers pursuing clinical licensure, emphasizing ethical practice, reflective supervision, trauma-informed assessment, and clinician resilience. Her supervision approach integrates evidence-based practice with supportive professional mentorship, helping clinicians build competence, confidence, and sustainable careers in behavioral health settings. She is particularly passionate about preparing clinicians to effectively serve rural and Appalachian communities through culturally responsive and community-centered practice.

Outside of work, Nola enjoys hiking the Appalachian Trail, camping, and spending time with family and friends.
