What is the Job Shadow Program at Concord University?

The Job Shadow Program is a short-term career exploration experience that allows you to spend a day (or part of a day) observing a professional in your field of interest. It’s a great way to learn about different careers, industries, and workplace environments, all before graduation.

Why should I participate?

Job shadowing helps you:

  • Explore possible career paths
  • Gain real-world insight beyond the classroom
  • Connect with professionals in your area of interest
  • Strengthen your résumé with a unique experience
  • Build confidence in your career decisions

When do job shadows take place?

Shadows are available during the Fall (September–January), Spring (February–April), and Summer (May–August). Scheduling depends on host availability, so early sign-up is encouraged.

How do I sign up for the Job Shadow Program?

Follow these steps:

  • Log into Handshake
  • Click “Schedule Appointments”
  • Choose “Job Shadow Program Appointment” under Career Services
  • Complete the Job Shadow Interest Survey
  • Upload or update your résumé in Handshake

Do I need a résumé to participate?

Yes. Your résumé will be shared with potential hosts, so having a polished version is required. If you need help, Career Services can assist before or during your appointment.

What happens in my appointment with Career Services?

During your appointment, we will:

  • Review and give feedback on your résumé
  • Explain how the Job Shadow Program works
  • Discuss your interests and goals
  • Explore potential matches or industries
  • Share tips on researching hosts and preparing professionally
  • Have you sign a program waiver

How will I be matched with a host?

Career Services reviews your interests, résumé, and availability, then contacts employers who align with your goals. If a host is identified, we’ll share their contact info with you so you can coordinate the details directly.

Can I request a specific industry or job type?

Absolutely! Be as specific as you want on the interest survey. Whether it’s marketing, law, healthcare, or another field. We’ll do our best to match you accordingly.

What if there’s no immediate match?

That’s okay! Career Services will continue looking and may suggest additional steps or research so you’re ready when an opportunity arises.

Will I get credit for participating?

This is a non-credit program, but it’s a valuable experience to include on your résumé or graduate school applications.

What if I had a great experience and want to do more?

That’s awesome! You can return for another shadow or connect with Career Services for next steps, like internships, mentorships, or career planning.

Is there a cost to participate?

Nope! The Job Shadow Program is completely free for students.

Can I participate more than once?

Yes! As long as there are opportunities and you’re in good standing, you’re welcome to shadow more than once.

What if my plans change or I need to cancel?

Please notify both Career Services and your host as soon as possible. We treat shadow matches as professional commitments and encourage timely communication.

Can I turn my shadow into an internship?

While there’s no obligation, if your host expresses interest in offering more, you’re welcome to follow up.

What is the Job Shadow Program at Concord University?

The Concord University Job Shadow Program is a career exploration experience designed to connect students with working professionals for a one-day visit. It provides students with a behind-the-scenes look at your profession and work environment and gives hosts the chance to offer guidance and insight to students who are curious about your field.

Why host a Concord student?

  • Support career exploration and workforce readiness
  • Build relationships with emerging talent
  • Highlight your organization and industry
  • Help students make informed, confident career choices

When do shadows take place?

We offer multiple sessions throughout the academic year: Fall (September–January), Spring (February–April), and Summer (May–August). You can select your availability when you complete the Host Interest Form. Each shadow typically lasts 4 to 8 hours and takes place over a single day.

Who can host a shadow?

Any working professional who operates in a professional setting can participate. Shadows can occur across any industry or role—diversity in career fields helps our students explore all kinds of opportunities. We welcome Concord alumni, supporters, and professionals from across the country and beyond.

Do job shadows have to happen in person or locally?

Not at all! Shadows can take place in person, virtually, or even at locations outside of West Virginia. Students often travel during breaks, so remote or non-local experiences can be a great fit.

What’s involved?

Just a few hours of your time. You set the agenda we’ll handle the logistics. Students come prepared, professional, and eager to learn.

Interested in hosting? Fill out the Host Interest Form or email careerservices@concord.edu for more info. Please also create a Handshake account following these steps: https://support.joinhandshake.com/hc/en-us/articles/219133047-Create-an-Employer-User-Account-Join-a-Company-and-Connect-with-Schools

What if my organization has more than one location?

You can host at any of your official office locations. Just make sure to provide the full address and city. Please note, home offices or informal settings are not eligible for this program.

Can I offer more than one shadow opportunity?

Yes! If you’d like to host in multiple departments or locations, simply submit a separate interest form for each opportunity.

How many students can I host?

That’s up to you. Most hosts take 1–3 students per day, while others host up to 10 or more. You can schedule one student per day or multiple students all at once. It’s flexible based on your availability and preferences.

Can I request specific qualifications from students?

Yes, to an extent. While we encourage inclusivity and openness, since the program is educational rather than evaluative, you can indicate preferences for major, experience level, or other qualifications on the Host Interest Form. For special circumstances, you can reach out directly to careerservices@concord.edu.

Am I expected to offer a job or internship afterward?

No. The program is purely educational. There is no expectation or obligation to hire.

How are students matched with shadow opportunities?

Students fill out an interest form and submit a résumé, cover letter and short statement of interest. Our team reviews each application and directs students based on their academic focus, expressed interest, and career goals. Host preferences are taken into account when possible.

How can I attract students to my opportunity?

The more detailed and engaging your description, the more likely it will appeal to students. Highlight what makes your role or industry unique, what they’ll see or do during the day, and any professional development value you can offer.

When will I know if I’ve been matched with a student?

We’ll notify you once the matching process concludes. At that time, we’ll connect you directly with the matched student(s) to coordinate details.

How will I connect with the student?

Students attend a required orientation and are responsible for contacting you by email. You’ll receive a notification when the outreach period begins. Keep an eye on your inbox for their message!

What will the student need from me?

When a student reaches out, they’ll be confirming logistics like time, location, dress code, and any preparation needed. Please also let them know about things like ID requirements, security procedures, lunch options, or parking info.

What if my student doesn’t reach out?

If you haven’t heard from your student within one week of the outreach period, contact careerservices@concord.edu so we can follow up.

Who arranges student travel?

Students are responsible for their own transportation. If helpful, feel free to send directions, parking instructions, or tips for finding your building.

What if we have special requirements like ID checks or fingerprinting?

Please notify the student of any additional requirements as early as possible so they can plan accordingly.

What should I prepare for the shadow day?

You’ll receive a host guidelines document with tips, but ultimately the schedule is yours to create. Most shadows include introductions, a tour, meetings with staff, observation, and time for questions. If you’re open to reviewing résumés or offering career advice, students always appreciate that.

Can I ask my student questions too?

Absolutely. Engaging them in conversation, or even conducting a mock interview, can enhance their learning and help them build confidence.

What if something comes up and I need to cancel?

Please inform both the student and the program coordinator at careerservices@concord.edu as soon as possible. Cancellations should be avoided unless absolutely necessary, as we consider your opportunity a confirmed commitment.

Am I required to complete a follow-up survey?

Yes, your feedback helps us improve the program each session. It only takes a few minutes and makes a big impact.

What if the experience wasn’t what I expected?

We welcome your honest feedback in the survey. If anything felt off or could be improved, we want to hear from you.

What if I’d like to offer the student an internship or job?

That’s fantastic! Feel free to contact the student directly and let us know if we can support you in any way.

How do I sign up for future sessions?

Reach out to careerservices@concord.edu to express your interest in upcoming sessions. We’d love to have you return as a host.
