Biography

When I was 19, my mother decided it was time for me to learn to play tennis. She arranged for me to take a lesson with the tennis pro at the club (in Greensboro). After the 3rd lesson, the pro told me I didn’t have to pay any more…. So I kept taking lessons and we got married. We had three lovely children.

We started our own tennis and swim club. He did all the outside work taking care of the courts and pool and I did the inside work (snack bar, baby sitting, cleaning). I thought his part sounded better so after 17 years, we sold the club and I went back to school to learn bookkeeping…. Something I’d been doing but didn’t understand. I earned a Master’s in Accounting and became a CPA and a CMA. I started teaching accounting at UNC-Greensboro and my husband started a new indoor tennis club.

One day, I realized that I was very good at Free Cell (meaning, I was spending a lot of time playing computer games!) and I thought, I don’t want to spend the rest of my life playing a computer game. Apparently, I wasn’t busy enough, so I began the Ph D program at UNC-G. They did not accept me the first time I applied. They told me my GRE score was not high enough, so I studied and took it again. I was not the smartest person in the program, but I was the oldest person. I was 58 years old when I earned my Ph D.

Because I had a Ph D., I interviewed for a position at Concord University and fell in love with the people and the place. My husband drove up with me to look around and we decided that it would be a good place to work.

And it was a WONDERFUL place to work…. But I was too old to make the commute so, after 7 years, I left Concord and moved back to Greensboro, and I currently teach at North Carolina A&T State University. I’ve been at A&T for almost 7 years.
