Program Information
In the Sociology program, students learn beyond the classroom. They will explore real-world social issues through experiences like prison field trips, community engagement projects, and internships with local organizations. We offer supportive professors, fostering small classes and approachable faculty to provide personalized mentoring, research opportunities, and career guidance. We also offer an emphasis in Criminology option: Students can pursue a Criminology emphasis while studying issues like policing, justice systems, and social inequality. Sociology builds skills in critical thinking, communication, and research that prepare students for careers in many fields—or for graduate school in areas like sociology, law, and social work. Courses connect sociology to areas like law, health, public service, and Appalachian communities while building data literacy and research skills in an accessible way. We are designed to fit your specific learning goals. You can complete the program on campus or fully online, and easily combine sociology with other majors or minors.
