CONCORD OFFERING NEW MASTER OF SCIENCE IN ATHLETIC TRAINING

ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University Athletic Training Program has received final approval and accreditation for the newly developed Master of Science in Athletic Training (MSAT).

This accreditation was awarded by CAATE (Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education). CAATE is the national accrediting body for all AT education programs. A student must graduate from an accredited AT program in order to be eligible to sit for the BOC exam (national certification exam for ATs) and earn the ATC credential.

Concord has maintained an accredited undergraduate AT program since 2004. In 2015 CAATE announced that the degree level requirement for AT programs would be changing to a master’s degree, prompting CU AT faculty and administrators to begin the process of transitioning the current undergraduate ATP to a graduate program.

“There have been several approval steps for the MSAT to reach full approval and completing the process is an exciting time and allows CU to continue to offer an AT program to future students,” stated Dr. Laura Wamsley, Assistant Professor and ATP Clinical Education Coordinator.

The MSAT will be a two year, full time graduate program, requiring both didactic and clinical education. Students interested in entering the field of athletic training can work towards admittance into the MSAT in two different ways. Concord offers a Bachelor of Science in Health Science degree with a concentration in pre-athletic training. Combining the HS-Pre AT degree and the MSAT is a 3+2 program, allowing students to complete both degrees in 5 years.

The second option is to enter the MSAT after completing a 4-year degree and meeting pre-requisite requirements for application. Application collection for the inaugural MSAT cohort will begin Summer 2021, with the first MSAT classes being offered Summer 2022.

For additional information on the MSAT, please visit the program’s webpage at https://www.concord.edu/msat or contact Laura Wamsley EdD, ATC at lwamsley@concord.edu, 304-384-6264 or John Roberts EdD, ATC at jcroberts@concord.edu, 304-384-6346.
