CONCORD UNIVERSITY AWARDS FIRST GEORGE FLOYD MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
Presentation Part of International Day of Peace Celebration
ATHENS, W.Va. – Concord University celebrated International Day of Peace on Tuesday, Sept. 21 with a performance by steel drum trio Ewabo and presentation of the first George Floyd Memorial Scholarship to Concord junior Ciah Russell.
The George Floyd Memorial Scholarship, established through a generous donation by Concord alumnus Charles Hall (Class of 1962), is being awarded to Concord students who are seeking careers with the intent on making a positive impact on the world as advocates for social change. Russell, a resident of Capitol Heights, Md., is majoring in biology with aspirations of becoming a veterinary ophthalmologist.
Dr. Michael Bean, Concord’s Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, presented the scholarship during the noontime concert held on the Subway Stage in the Beasley Student Center.
“Ciah was the perfect recipient of the scholarship,” Dr. Bean says. “She met the criteria but most importantly wants to continue to bring about a positive change here at Concord University and in our community. We want our students to continue to inspire change and be proud to be a part of Concord University.”
Following the scholarship presentation, Ewabo took the stage. From Bob Marley and Bob Dylan to the Commodores and Jimmy Buffett, these musicians offered a string of classics like “My Girl,” “Stand by Me” and “Three Little Birds,” all with an island twist. Originating from Trinidad and Tobago and St. Martin, Ewabo is committed to performing the highest caliber of music to the delight of all music lovers with a particular emphasis on the “steel drums,” better known as “pan” to people of its native land.
Ewabo’s appearance at Concord has been made possible by a West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission Diversity for Equity Grant and by the University’s Diversity Council and Office of Multicultural Affairs.
