Upward Bound

All services provided by the Upward Bound (UB) Program are FREE, and students can earn MONEY by participating in the program.

The three components of the UB Program are the academic year program, a Summer residential component, and a residential Bridge component.  The Academic Year and non-Bridge Summer Session will provide instruction in composition, foreign languages, literature, mathematics, and laboratory science.  Additional activities may include computer science, study skills, career exploration, multi-cultural awareness, and college cross disciplinary activities that will provide opportunities to increase the students chances of achieving a successful college entry.  Also, classes in life skills, tutoring, and individual & group advising will be provided.

Upward Bound provides its students with the following helpful opportunities:

  1. Tutoring in their school in the subjects they need;
  2.  Assistance with financial aid, college admissions, scholarships, ACT/SAT, career decision making, and much more;
  3.  Computer technology education;
  4. Saturday Cultural Enrichment programs;
  5. Summer residential program; and
  6. Bridge program where students can earn college credit.

UB Program students will be involved in activities associated with their educational plans that emphasize a positive, active, and encouraging learning environment which will help to increase student self-confidence, self-esteem, motivation to achieve, and academic performance.

On a yearly basis, UB will serve 150 low-income and/or first generation high school students who have a need for academic support to successfully complete high school, enter post-secondary school and earn a baccalaureate degree.  The Upward Bound Program targets schools from the southern West Virginia counties of Greenbrier, McDowell, Mercer, Monroe, and Summers.
